SHORT Post – 3D Hercules club amulet

During my studies at the Freie Universität I spent much time with the so-called Hercules clubs. The aim was to write a paper about roman club amulets and their maybe germanic bone/antler derivatives.

This is now the beginning of a series of articles about amulets and the possibilities of visualizing single finds as well as statistic summaries.

3D reconstruction of single objects

Although gold is a very appreciated material in archaeological finds and is mostly well published, it is really difficult to find good illustrations of club amulets.

This object was found in cologne and is a made of light gold sheet with smelted on wire loops. These symbolize knots, like on a wooden club. It’s possible that the bottom of the amulet was decorated with a jewel or glass, now missing.

The above renderings show an early stage of the reconstruction. Many things are missing or have to be adjusted. Also, the gold material could use a rework.

As always, comments, remarks or sharing is greatly appreciated.
