Why do you actually need 3D scans as an archaeologist? I have the originals in the magazine and can examine the original if in doubt!
This attitude is widespread and is often expressed.
And as an archaeologist, I can absolutely understand this attitude. Nevertheless, I would like to outline the advantages of 3D scanning using some 3D scans that we made together with Formwerk3D in 2022.
Difficulties with original wooden finds …
The short clip at the beginning shows five separately scanned fragments of a wooden disc wheel. During the recovery of this wheel, it broke into several pieces and was then stored in the wet storage facility. Of course, the finds can also be examined there, but they have to be taken out of their storage pools each time and must not dry out. The sheer weight of the wood and water is also a hindrance.
Processing marks are difficult to photograph because the wood is very darkly discolored due to storage in the fencing floor and can only be photographed with strong lamps. We therefore used an Artec Eva-M scanner to capture these objects. This measures the surface using projected strip light and delivers fast, clean results. The new HD scanning software in Artec Studio allows us to capture even fine surface details cleanly.
Assembling the individual components as in the clip above would endanger the very soft structures, as they could quickly break when plugged together.
3D scans as digital twins
Alternatively, the digital twins can easily be assembled digitally and measured and documented in detail. The shaded MatCAP representations clearly show traces of processing and breakage that are difficult to make visible in the original. This means that design details and wear and tear can be quickly recorded, measured and presented.
At the same time, no one has to work in the confined spaces of a wet storage facility to do this work; all they need is their computer. Several people can also view the objects at the same time, as the digital data is easy to share. This means that experts from a wide range of disciplines can work on the same objects in parallel, without the actual objects having to leave their safe locations.

The 3D scans of the wooden objects were created during my work for Formwerk 3D and Archäologische Illustrationen.
