Restoring railways is a complex and expensive undertaking. Replacing individual signs and plaques is particularly difficult, as these are also popular with collectors, which can significantly increase their price – if these spare parts are even still available. 3D printing can provide a cost-effective solution here and help to restore the overall visual impression of the locomotive. That’s why we are presenting 3D printed locomotive sign replicas that we produced for the Steinhuder Meerbahn E.V.
The signs of the Steinhuder Meerbahn
Some time ago, the Steinhuder Meerbahn E.V. contacted us with a request to produce two signs for their restoration projects. The templates used were a slightly damaged plaster copy of a sign and a picture of a second sign that was no longer available.
After extensive consultation, we decided to construct the signs cleanly on the PC and to add the damaged areas. This saved us from having to do a 3D scan of the plaster model and kept us within budget.
Based on the images, we drew 3D models using the original lettering to preserve the style of the originals. The damaged and repaired areas on the plaster sign were added and constructed in consultation with the club. Scratches, dents and other deformations were also corrected to create a virtually brand new condition.
3D printing and painting
Since the signs will later be used outdoors, we decided to 3D print them in ASA. This material is more temperature and weather resistant than PLA and is ideal for these purposes. Filament prints in particular show slight creasing caused by layer lines due to their structure. To ensure that these do not interfere during painting, the prints were sanded, filled and finely sanded again. They were then painted with a black primer and various gold/brass tones to create a realistic metallic effect.
Summary
Projects like this show the possibilities of creating realistic replicas using 3D printing to support cost-effective restorations. This is particularly important for smaller institutions and associations with a small budget. Since all data is stored digitally, the replicas can be re-produced at any time and used for other purposes.
